The Importance of Non-Dominant Hand in Tennis – part II – backhand (one-handed, two-handed, slice)

In this short analysis, you will see how non-dominant hand has a very important role for all three kinds of backhand.

  1. ONE-HANDED BACKHAND TOPSPIN
  • While Dominic Thiem’s left hand holds the throat of the racket, it helps with a unit turn and full backswing
  • It fully extends to the opposite direction from the dominant hand (behind the body) during the follow-through stage – IT HELPS WITH THE BALANCE AND IT ENABLES THE PERFECT RACKET PATH

2. TWO-HANDED BACKHAND TOPSPIN can be considered as a similar shot to a forehand while having support from two hands.

  • While maintaining support behind the grip with an eastern grip, non-dominant hand brings enormous help to the follow through
  • It is loose and the hand goes freely all the way behind the opposite shoulder

3. BACKHAND SLICE

  • Same as for one-handed backhand,  non-dominant hand holds the throat of the racket, it goes straight to the shoulder level, helps with a unit turn and full, squared backswing
  • During the follow-through, again, it maintains the balance with the full extension behind the body
